The following pages are a reflection upon four regions of the Earth that hold personal importance to me.
Aratta - this is about the ancient civilisation that developed in the steppe regions north of the Black Sea. This is the world's most ancient civilisation and, remarkably, some of its traditions and culture are still found in modern Ukraine, particularly amongst the Cossacks. The culture of Aratta spread into India, Mesopotamia, Western China and across Europe but it is on the steppe lands north of the Black Sea, in the territory of modern Ukraine, that we find the earliest relicts of Aratta, where people recorded their writing, law codes, deities and culture. Dated well before Stonehenge, the Giza pyramids or the Sumerian ziggurats, it is only relatively recently, in post Soviet times, that the West is beginning to learn that the cradle can be seen in Ukraine.
Albion - this was ancient Briton. The pages here show you some of the impressive megalithic monuments that you can visit in England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland. You cannot help but wonder at the technologies and cultures of those distant days. Many of their sites are geographically and geometrically located with a precision that we would find difficult to achieve today without the aid of GPS. The questions of "Why?" and "How?" demand recognition even if the answers remain elusive.
Antarctica - the most pristine and beautiful environment on Earth. The seals and birds show no fear of Man and individual lichens are many, many centuries old. This is a world that has been seen by very few people and where, largely, Man has left no trace of his passing. Yet today Antarctica is under threat of tourism and industry that is based thousands of miles to the north. This beautiful but savage environment is extraordinarily delicate. It deserves to be noticed and conserved.
Arizona - unlike the frozen desert of Antarctica, this hot, arid desert is like another world. Remove the plants and paint the sky pink and imagine this is what Mars would look like. It is another raw landscape where, in some places, you can see no trace of Mankind. Standing alone in this desert, it is hard to comprehend that Mankind is altering our whole planet.
